Halftime Talks Episode 101 The Field
Checking In On This Years Goals
How many goals have we abandoned?
Before you listen
Maybe it was New Year’s, and you had all the ambition in the world to go to the gym and get fit. Recorded in mid August 2016, this talk asks you to look at your progress on this year’s goals and remove the dust a lack of attention has left on them.
Goals don’t get done when you set them and forget them. They get done when you check in and reorient yourself. When I was challenged to write my goals out again, I started with my vision, because decisions come easy once your vision informs your choices. Begin with small wins and treat your weeks like experiments. It’s never too early or too late to start.
Listen for the routine near the end: a question before bed about what puts you in accord with the person you want to become, and two at the end of the week, the highs and the lessons learned. Kept up, it makes you stand in front of yourself.
From the talk
It's easy to make decisions as long as your vision informs your choices.
Treat your days, your weeks, your months, like experiments.
Magical, memorable moments. That's what defines a life.
Sit with this
- What can I do before I go to bed that puts me in accord with the person I want to become?
- How can I improve? Even if it's just a little bit?
- What were the highs of this week?

I want you guys to listen not only what your minds but listen to the authenticity that your heart is able to talk to you with. In today’s episode, we are going to be checking in on our goals, our goals that we may have set mid year, beginning of the year, last week last night, it does not matter. We know that the achievement of who we want to become the experiences that we cover, and that we want to experience on a week by week day by day basis is not done, because when you set it and forgot it. Quite the opposite. Not only will we set it, but we will diligently look at it. Check in with it adjusted reorientate ourselves to it. So there was a day.
Let’s just say it was New Years that you had all the ambition in the world, to go to the gym, to lose the weight to get fit to get toned. And now we sit wherever you whenever you listen to this, but for me it is mid August. How many goals have we abandoned? And how many have we accomplished? Have we taken inventory necessary to achieve it, I was challenged to write out my goal again. And so as I wrote those goals down, I went forward with my vision first. And so it’s easy to make decisions. As long as your vision informs your choices. It’s easy to move and know what moves you in the integrity of your dream. And it’s also easy to take no action.
And I challenge you to be one of the people who will listen to this and take the necessary action to begin the experiencing of your desires. No matter where in the year you’re listening to this, I want you to look back on the highlights of this year last year. But this year more in particular and what stands out above and beyond everything else. If I was a betting man, if I was a man willing to take that wager, I would wager that the things this year that really stand head and shoulders above anything else are not the things you bought, they are not the things you bought, they are the experiences that you were afforded. And so as we look at these experiences, as we look at the things that we’ve overcome, as we look at the person, we become accomplished, things that we had set out at one point, I challenge you to know to recognize and to acknowledge your capacity to continue doing that.
That one thing that you’ve been avoiding just a little bit longer than it should can equally be knocked out. Now there’s a whole nother you on the other side of this ridge there’s a whole nother you waiting that saying to you saying when you get this done, we will have clearer fields, we will be able to run unobstructed by our own limiting ideas by our own clutter that we filled up the closet with, close the door and try to imagine that it wasn’t there. But if we’re honest with ourselves for a second, if we’re honest with ourselves for a second because there’s nobody here but my voice now and you it’s possible. You can get it done within you is the willpower within you as the strength within you is the ability to create a system that will make this easier.
Window to the year is closing and what will you be able to fit within the wheelhouse of accomplishing in 2016 There is a Tony Robbins quote which comes to mind that I have to share. Tony has a quote that says people tend to overestimate what they can get done in a short term, and underestimate what they can get done in the long term. Well, I say that to say, it begins with the movement, it begins with the small wins, it begins by bringing an order to your day, to your night. It begins by putting yourself first. Because if you do not make sense of yourself and the things that you’re doing, if what you’re doing is not feeding into a broader vision of who you want to become, then you’re actually going backwards, you’re either growing or you’re dying, make a choice, be conscious of that choice.
And if you’re unhappy with the choice that you’re making, make a different choice. Treat your days, your weeks, your months, like experiments, experiments to test the hypothesis of what this behavior can become in relationship to the man that I want to be, or the woman that you want to be. I say all this to say, because I know one thing, it holds true in the morning, and at night, it holds true at your highest moments. And at your lowest moments it holds true, no matter what you’re going through. And that thing that holds so true is that you are worth it. Your ideas are worth it. Your dreams are worth it. Your aspirations are worth it, your vision for who you want to become, is worth it.
Now, as we transition from just writing a dream down, and engaging, listen to that experiment Tality episode, listen to that small wins episode. Listen to that within arm’s reach episode, listen to that umbrella theory episode, and begin to facilitate the necessary things that will bring about the skills that will put you in a chord with who you say you want to be. The only have less than four months left to 2016. How can we engage every single day going forward to make it one of the most special years of our life? And many of you may be saying it may be too late. No, it’s never too early or too late to start. We have a lot of time, a lot can be done. If you just begin by starting it sets a cascade of events in motion that can put you in front of the right person that can rearrange your life in a way that brings the resources to bear a lot sooner than even you could have imagined.
So why would you shortchange yourself, it’s going to be these weeks, these days, these months, these years of your life that you will look back upon and say, Man, if I only had made a decision that put my life as a priority. So since that day will eventually come that day might as well be today. improve upon the day, tomorrow. And I say this, I say begin your week, begin your day, begin this hour by looking for the magic. Make today memorable. And try to be your best in every moment. Magical, memorable moments. That’s what defines a life. That sweat defines the highs. That’s what the taste of victory truly looks like to an individual pursuing their passion. Now I can continue this conversation indefinitely.
But I want that next step to be what can I do before I go to bed that puts me in accord with the person I want to become. And as you finish that today, go into tomorrow, ask yourself, How can I improve? Even if it’s just a little bit? How can I begin to improve? And at the end of the week, I want you to ask yourself another question What were the highs of this week? What were the high moments this week? Also, what were the lessons learned? And are as these things become behavioral routines and rituals that you adopt on a weekly, monthly a yearly basis. You are forced to stand in front of yourself. Letting the experience be the receipt of your psychology and knowing if you will What different outcomes we have to change our psychology, our mentality, our physiology, in some cases, to be the person we want to become.
But the set it and forget it, the write it without any kind of routine or system that to remember it. You’ve set yourself up for a long time of dealing with the inevitability of failure. But failure is now who we are, we’re destined for greatness. There’s something unique inside of you waiting to be shared with the world. Do yourself a favor and excavate examine that. Bring that to the market. And you can to be a valuable player on whatever team you seek out. My name is Rahim. Rasul this has been another episode of halftime talks. I appreciate your, your open air.
