Before you listen

Our voices go out into the world through our words. Let’s not forget that the broader conversation about who we are in the world is also composed from our choices.

Each choice is like a paintbrush applying a color to the canvas of a life. How we spend our time is a ballot, and as we tally where our time goes and what we pursue, the tally becomes the composite image of who we are. Often what a person says they value and what their choices say don’t jive. None of this makes us prisoners. Some of the most remarkable people in history shifted direction, and each stage of their lives became a distinct chapter. Malcolm X is one of my favorites, for the man he kept becoming.

Listen for the image near the end of a listener who feels what we emanate through our choices, beyond our words. That is where we stop faking it until we make it, and let our choices say we are ready.

From the talk

  • Each choice that we make is like a paintbrush applying a specific color to the canvas that which is our life.

  • How we spend our time is a ballot cast toward an understanding of who we are.

  • We begin to stop using our mouth as an instrument of proclamation and let our choices be that declarative device that cuts through the noise.

Sit with this

Take some time and jot them down.

  1. It's one thing to say you love something, but when your actions are in direct opposition to those words, what do those words really mean?
  2. If you say you're a family man and family is last on your list, what does that say?

Welcome back to another episode of Halftime Talks. My name is Rahim Rasul, and you’re listening to the podcast that recognizes that in the middle of your game of life, whether you’re by 10 or down by 20, we all need halftime talks to uplift us, inspire us and challenge us to bring that level of performance it’s gonna take to win the game.

So we’re back. There’s another episode of halftime talks. And you know how we get down, we begin with a little bit of appreciation. So Let’s appreciate, I appreciate the rituals that make us who we are. If you’re an athlete, and the way you tie your shoe, if it’s the when you wake up and you immediately brush your teeth to start and center your day or meditate. I appreciate the prayer before a meal that itself. Appreciates how things may have arrived at the table. I appreciate the rituals of how we organize our day, our mind, our behavior, so that the outlook in which we approach the world is pristine.

So a lot of these rituals may have been given to us, and some have may been created by us, but it’s these rituals that hold us together, add to the fabric of who we are. I appreciate the ritual. So today, as we begin this recording of another halftime talks, it can’t get more beautiful than what it is outside today, and it takes the heat, it takes the rain, it takes the thunder, it takes the cold, to truly bring the context of this appreciation and the focus and today, what we’re going To be conversing about is an idea that choices have voices at the surface. It’s self explanatory, but hey, we’re gonna tease and explore this out through this episode of halftime talk.

So gather round and let’s go you I love to think that each of us possesses the capacity and the ability to make choices in our lives. Choices are the hallmark of what makes us human, the ability to discern between two options and go in one direction, to be decisive, to cut off all of the options and to see down a path which will be not only favorable, but desirable, and these choices, choices are so fundamental to the direction of our lives. So this episode is about choices having voices, and our choices are our voices. Each choice that we make is like a paintbrush applying a specific color to the canvas that which is our life.

A lot of times we think choices are innocuous. Sometimes we believe that we were cajoled or we were forced to react and respond in a way that limited our choices. But our choices have voices, and it doesn’t always begin with the easy choices, the choices that we may be facing are the results of other choices. A lot of times, as we grow and develop, we see behavior and we hear the narrative coming off the tongues of others saying what they want, who they want to be and what they value, as we begin to examine the choices said individual may make. We see a dichotomy. We see a paradox of what their voice says and what their choices are saying, and they don’t jive, not all the time.

What we must recognize, realize and understand is our choices are part of our voice to do something or to not do something, how we spend our time is a ballot cast toward an understanding of who we are as we tally where we spend our time, as we tally what we eat, as we tally how we behave, as we tally what we pursue. Each of these choices constructs the composite image of who we are in the world at any specific time. And I’m not saying that we are prisoners to the choices that we have made, because at any moment, we can shift the direction of the story that we prefer to create some of the most amazing individuals in human history.

Have shifted the direction of their life, where each stage of their life becomes a distinct chapter. One of my favorite individuals is Malcolm X, not necessarily sometimes for the bombastic approach. In bombastic is maybe not a fair term, but how he went about, what he went about, I love Malcolm for the man that he continued to become each stage of his life were the result of choices made for him, choices that he may have made for himself and ultimately, later on in life, him, seeing his world view and aligning the choices that he saw that worldview represent and align with that image. It’s one thing to say you love something, but when your actions are in direct opposition to those words.

What do those words really mean? If you say you’re a family man and family is last on your list, what does that say? Our choices have voices. We cannot expect a quantum leap. We cannot expect to grasp farther than what we’ve prepared for. So our choices open doors, give rise and give passage to possibility as those cumulative choices add up, what we seek, who we hope To become, finds itself within our arms reach. There is not a wild opposition of self that we talk about and self that we behave in. Even if the world cannot see the congruency of self, it still exists. So as we move forward into continuing to become that version of ourself that has taken root in our mind, imagination, and we begin to express that out in the world, there is no excuse me if there is no division in the mind and the behavior you are one when you act, as if, when you behave, When you move into the energy sphere of any integrity.

It’s hard to say what you’re not that made sense in my mind, so let me just rewind it a little and bring it back. If. You perform at a level, in practice, in putting up reps, in preparation, in training, in simulations that others are doing in the game as well. And if in your mind, there is no division between the simulation and what they’re performing. Chances are you’re up to speed. Choices are voices as we choose. I would like to think there is an all powerful listener who doesn’t see what we say, but feels what we emanate through our choices, not just our words, beyond our words and to the choices, to our behavior, to our preparation, to our mindset, to our activity, to how We relate with the world and that all powerful SEER lines us up simply as that.

So the revelation doesn’t come from now being prepared and it’s given that revelation is us understanding that’s always been there, awaiting our arrival choices of voices. As we begin to understand the fabric of our choices and how that affects the output, the creation of the deliverable of self in the world, we begin to Stop faking it until we make it. We begin to stop using our mouth as an instrument of proclamation and let our choices be that declarative device that cuts through the noise that says I am ready choices are voices. So as you look about your life, what are you saying with the choices that you are making?

My name is Rahim Rasul, this has been another episode of halftime talks. I appreciate you listening. I appreciate you tuning in as often as we publish. And so until next time, be good. Be great. And guess what, we’ll be back peace. You.
