Before you listen

The talk opens with Langston Hughes’s poem “Harlem” and its question about a dream deferred. We all have a tomb of forgotten dreams and misplaced ideas. The better question is how to make more of the ideas you really want to follow through on a reality.

The central image is a pregnancy: you become pregnant with an idea and give birth to reality. Carrying it to term means protecting it from naysayers, who believe in evidence over possibility, and giving it an environment where it can grow. Ideas are free, like fruit on a tree. The work is planting the seed and growing a new crop, one idea at a time, so you don’t become confused and complacent.

Listen for the day of inception you’re asked to remember, when the idea was breathing in you and you couldn’t grab a notebook fast enough. Your dreams grow and evolve with you, and it’s never too late to start.

From the talk

  • We all have a tomb of forgotten dreams, misplaced ideas.

  • They believe in what's happened, not what can happen. They believe in evidence, not possibility.

  • It's not the dream that has the power. The dream was the inception, the starting point.

Sit with this

Take some time and jot them down.

  1. Do you remember that day of inception?
  2. Can you plant that seed from the fruit and grow a new crop?
  3. Are you willing to step up to the challenge and take your idea to term?

Welcome back. This is episode number six. In today’s episode, we’re going to be talking about a dream deferred. So I want to begin today’s episode by reading Langston Hughes poem entitled Harlem and dream deferred. [He reads Langston Hughes’s poem “Harlem.”] We all have a tomb of Forgotten Dreams, misplaced ideas. The question isn’t what happened? The question should be how can I make more of my ideas that I really want to follow through on a reality. So that’s why I began with the poem by Langston Hughes.

And this whole process of dream and dream creation making ideas happen. Let’s begin at the day of inception. Do you remember that day of inception, you sat there and you’re pumped and fueled with life, we call that inspiration, where the idea was breathing in you, you don’t know the source of where it came from. But there was such rich data and content, that you couldn’t grab a notebook fast enough to write everything down. The idea that you were going to create set like it was posing for a portrait, and you stand you stood at every vantage point, capturing every minut detail, as it was like this once in a lifetime gift that was going to evaporate like a dream if you didn’t capture it. How did those moments feel?

Just just reflect on one of those moments? What was one of those moments answer that question for yourself? How did it feel? How did you feel that next day? What did you want to do? Who did you want to share it with? You know, that is the beginning of greatness. But like Langston Hughes said, what happens to a dream deferred? Does it? Does it stink like rotten meat? So that means the dream has been sitting there for so long, and it’s starting to putrefy? It’s starting to go bad. But do they go bad? Do we have a chance to reclaim our Forgotten Dreams? I’m here to tell you, Yes, you do. But one thing you must understand is your dreams are going to continue to grow and evolve, they’re going to evolve with you, your 19 year old dreams are not the same as your 2021 3031 4041 5051 year old dreams, it’s never too late to start, I’d like you to consider that.

The idea that you became pregnant without Now follow me that you became pregnant with idea. And you’re gonna give birth to reality, you know. And so if we can draw that parallel, let’s see how many other ways that we can extrapolate it backwards of how we can nurture this idea how we can carry this idea to term and give birth to the world so the world can see it. Okay. So the first thing that we would do is we take care of ourself. We wouldn’t let any outside influences really start dictating how we are relating with the idea. So you know what that means, right? It means that typically, a lot of people are naysayers. They believe in what’s happened, not what can happen. They believe in evidence, not possibility.

So some of your best friends some of your family, like I said in a previous episode may not be the ones to share it with. You can have to keep it quiet, keep it under wraps, unless you have a peer that really understands and gets you. So you have to protect your dream, similar to how you protect your fetus, or you protect your child or you protect anything that you love that you want to see come to term. The next thing we have to do is we have to provide an environment of nutrition, a Vironment of sustenance and environment that this, this idea can grow and thrive. So we have to become better you have to train you have to go get the resources it’s going to take to prove that you have a level of excellence and competence in a space not to the world, but to yourself that you can make this dream a reality.

And this nurturing environment may be a different kind of peer group may be a different peer group that supports you in how you need to be supported. So to bring this idea to term to bring this dream to term, it’s less about the outside world, and more about our inside world, we get caught up in creating so many ideas, that one can’t even survive. So what happens to a dream deferred? It’s not the dream that has the power. The dream was the inception, the starting point, the impregnation, taking it to term as the journey, taking it to term as why we are here, taking it to turn is the process of turning thought to form. And that’s the creative genius of our human capacity. Some people specialize in idea creation.

They gather ideas in journals and notebooks. They share ideas freely and openly with friends. They watch other people create and say to themselves, I could do that. I had that idea. He beat me. He bet me, nobody can steal an idea from you. Because ideas are, are free. They’re abundant. They’re everywhere. They’re like fruit on a tree that you can pick off. But can you plant that seed from the fruit and grow a new crop? That’s the challenge that some people are willing to take on that challenge. And I challenge you to not let your dreams become deferred. And take your dreams to term and don’t overwhelm yourself with so many ideas at once. That you become confused and complacent. Okay. So at the end of the day, it really doesn’t matter what happens to a dream deferred.

Because there’s so many, but what really matters is what we’re willing to do now, are you willing to step up to the challenge and take your idea to term to show yourself and secondarily the world that more as possible, because more as possible, that deferred dream, no matter what anybody says, is written inside you. It’s allowed you to become who you are today. And it will shape who you continue to be. You can’t leave it behind the world is built on integration. That’s things coming together to create convergence, magnitude and power. The thing we must do is use our skill and ability to move things forward. We can’t look too far back because we’ll end up pointing in that direction and didn’t moving in that direction. So together let’s move forward. Let’s take our dreams secure, nurtured him. Give them all this necessary. They made to come to terms thanks for listening.
