Halftime Talks Episode 30 The Field
Encouragement: Making a Difference
Is that just cause for us to write off a generation that will be leading us at one point?
Before you listen
The emerging generations need our encouragement, and they deserve it. It may not be the whole world you reach. It may be one person, maybe two.
The talk grew out of a conversation with someone close to me who is heading to college. Every time we talk, I make sure to affirm him, and I tell him I love you, because you never know who needs that. At 37 I could see how long it took me to take responsibility for the direction of my own life: not until my early 20s. Young people begin to see themselves through your eyes. Their behavior may reflect a different image, and you can still champion the person you know is there. Time with someone young also shows you what you’re still capable of.
Listen for the close, and the memory of the teacher who pulled you aside to say you weren’t working to your highest potential. Someone at the grocery store or on the way to college may need only that much.
From the talk
They begin to see themselves through your eyes, good and bad.
While your behavior may be reflecting a different image, I know who you are, so I'm going to champion that person.
You never know how much your words can inspire, enlighten, and affect and impact somebody else.
Sit with this
- Do you still have their curiosity?
- Do you still have their optimistic view on possibility?

In today’s episode, what we’re going to be talking about is the difference that we can make as individuals as part of this larger macro picture of society. We all have the power within us to actually affect it may not be the whole world, but it may be one person and maybe two people. You never know the type of people that you have in your peer environment. So in today’s episode, we’re going to examine that, and we’re going to see what exactly the impact that we can have. You’ll understand it by reflecting on the life that you’ve lived up to this point. So the essence, this idea stems from a conversation I had with a close person in my life. Now I champion for this individual, because he’s at an age when he’s going to college.
He’s at an age where you would think, just by him declaring herself an adult, he would be an adult. Sometimes we all grow in our own speeds, what looks so clear to me now, at the age of 37, wasn’t always so clear. I defered to authority. I took my time, I didn’t really begin to take responsibility for the direction of my life until I was in my early 20s. Now looking back, you get to see that others always can see what’s so clearly, you see. Now when you believe in somebody, or you want the best in them, be it your child, somebody in the community, you don’t necessarily know what they’re going through. So just just for a second, remember…. Do me a favor, if it’s your child, and they’re going through drama and challenges strive.
Remember the time when you were their age, don’t be so quick to dismiss it as a logical acts of being a child. This is part of our own growth and maturation process. You do not know how much you can actually affect and impact a person. You know, I was talking to this individual. And one of the things that I make sure that I try to do every time I talk to him as affirm him, because he not only does he need it, he deserves it. While we may not always agree with the decisions, and the thought process that our younger generations come to, but it’s up to us to shape and develop that spectrum. So that they may have the ability to problem solve, the ability to see themselves in the way that you see them not necessarily from a perspective of lecture, but a conversation of full intent.
So I tell him, I love you. Because you never know who needs that. I love you not necessarily just for the words, but from the perspective that I care about you. There’s times in our lives when we felt like we’re going about it at ourselves. We’re going about it alone. I’m the only one who has my back. It doesn’t matter what the picture of the world paints, but sometimes you just need to hear that. Even for you. I love you. I don’t know why you’re listening. I’m not sure where you’re going. I’m not sure the dreams that you have now that you want to achieve in some fixed period of time but I love you you’re worth it. You are absolutely worth it. You’re capable of it.
Why are you capable of it? Because you have the capacity to visualize it. There wouldn’t be a dream If there wasn’t a vision, and implicit in a vision, are the are the getting them kind of emotional, implicit within the vision or the steps to achieve it within the question or the answers within a query is the path. So I, I tell this to him, you are capable. You know, the interesting thing about mentorship, the interesting thing about sharing how you feel, especially with with the up and coming generations, is that they begin to see themselves through your eyes, good and bad. So you never know the impact that your words can actually have. I can give selflessly unconditionally, there are no conditions that should take me out of seeing you as who you are.
While your behavior may be reflecting a different image, I know who you are, so I’m going to champion that person. Being young you do young things. But there’s is that just cause for me to give up on you? Is that just cause for us to write off a generation that will be leading us at one point? Is it just cause for us to judge and condemn, and to put into a box and set aside? I see you, I see you for your brilliance, your ingenuity, your faculty of technology in modern times, your creativity, that the youngsters have. Their ability to dream in their pursuit to achieve it, they have all the ambition, they have all the energy, they have all this earn harness potential, that as we get older, we’ve moved beyond.
That’s why hanging with somebody young, not only benefits them, but it benefits you, which shows you a picture of what you’re still capable of bringing forth. They say invention is brought forth by future generations. Why? Because we lose our curiosity and they have it. We may have a different path, we may understand a certain frame of logic, we may be able to encourage and inspire them. But do you still have their curiosity? Do you still have their optimistic view on possibility? Do you have that blind optimism not blind and sense of ignorance, but the blind optimism that hasn’t been impeded on and stepped upon and face the adversity was taken away your curiosity or your passion? I say all this to say that there’s somebody it might be in your community, he might be working at the grocery store, working on working toward college, and all he needs all she needs, all they need is a little bit of encouragement.
All they need is somebody to believe in them. So it can even highlight why they should believe in themselves. It’s kind of selfish, because it makes me feel so good. When I’m in a position to where I’m doing that. But that selfless act extends. It goes out, not only do they see a different template of behavior to model, you want to spread that energy, you want to go out and push toward that possibility. If they’re not believing in yourself, they’re they’re leaving themselves to their own devices and their own logic. And it takes them in all these different directions, which may not necessarily aid them in getting where they definitely want to go. So within us are the store houses of experience, the store houses of love that we can share with them, and guide them and direct them and encourage them and love on them unconditionally.
So with that, I say, hey, halftime talks, people out there, you never know how much your words can inspire, enlighten, and affect and impact somebody else. Remember the time when it was dumb for you, the teacher who believed in you pulled you aside and said, Hey, I don’t think you’re working to your highest potential. To the person to say,” Hey, man, I don’t know anybody that can do this, like you. You’re our best. I look forward to seeing how far you can go.” It’s these kinds of things. It’s these type of encouragement. It’s these aspects of inclusion of bringing people in as part of a community and understanding that they within themselves have the light within them to to shine on the world. So don’t forget your power. Don’t forget what you can do.
