Before you listen

Counting our blessings can sound like a simple topic. Living in a city of millions, though, it’s common to hear people enumerate every challenge without giving any airtime to the ways they are blessed. This talk exists to bring our awareness back to the blessings coming our way.

I remix a question from Langston Hughes, one of the first poets I latched on to: in place of a dream deferred, what happens to an unacknowledged blessing? Health, relationships, shelter, food and a heart that beats each morning are easy to pass over until sickness or contrast makes us notice. The talk borrows the Egyptian image of a heart weighed against a feather, and sets a light heart against a heavy one, consumed by worry and a scarcity mentality.

Listen for the closing run, where the blessings get specific: a book that holds someone’s greatest life experiences for $10, or a lifetime of studying music congealed into a 60 minute performance.

From the talk

  • The only thing you're going to find with a scarcity mentality is things that justify it.

  • As we turn towards the orientation of acknowledging the blessings, there becomes an overwhelming avalanche of things to feel appreciative for.

  • You're one of one, there will never be another copy.

Sit with this

Take some time and jot them down.

  1. How often are we acknowledging these blessings, the special people, the special circumstances in our life?
  2. How long can these unacknowledged blessings continue to persist patiently?
  3. Can you begin to acknowledge this bigger, broader, more expansive world?

As I said, today, we’re going to be talking about the notion of being blessed and I want to remix a poem or at least the title of a poem by one of my favorite poets growing up the one of the first poets I ever latched on to was Langston Hughes. And he asked a pivotal question, the question that I’ve hoped, you’ve asked yourself at one point, but I’m going to remix it, I’m gonna extract the idea out of it and replace it with my own idea. He asked the questions, what happens to a dream deferred? I like to question so I’m going to remix the question and ask you a similar question, a question that will hopefully open your mind a question that will hopefully give you a level of introspection to examine your own life.

I like to ask you to question what happens to an unacknowledged blessing. Right? So within a question, there’s implications. There’s implications I’m painting a picture. I want you to recognize that there are blessings that are happening on our behalf that are going unacknowledged. And when I mean unacknowledged, I mean, we are not putting the level of praise the level of appreciation behind some of the things that our life is blessed. And so we look at our life we look at our health, we look at our relationships, we look at our income we look at our our shelter and our food, how many these blessings are going on unacknowledged? And if we do have the have the gall to say we acknowledge them? How often are we acknowledging these blessings, the special people, the special circumstances in our life, where we stand in grace and in in God’s abundance, without necessarily acknowledging them?

So I want to repeat the first question. What happens to an unacknowledged blessing? Langston asked a similar question with drain so do they wither away over time? Do they ever feel unappreciated that they leave your experience? See most of the dreams, most of the things that we’ve asked for, we may actually be experiencing, and so they’re no longer what we say we want. Because in that perspective of one, most of the time we project on things we don’t have, I want to continue to have this health I want to continue to have these beautiful relationships. I want to continue. So I want you to examine some of these unacknowledged blessings. Another question I have is how long can these unacknowledged blessings continue to persist patiently for Going into your life without a simple glance, or an eye wink or head nod or acknowledgement, like how long will it sit?

And the reason I even I even bring that question up is because I want you to realize that the blessings that man can share with each other the blessings that community can provide the blessings that your mother, your father, your family, all these things in the world can give you is that there are from a human element, a human element of orchestration. But the true blessings that I’ve come to understand are unconditional. So I’ve never really sat and acknowledged every faculty of my body that wakes up that wakes me up that beats my heart, like, Wow, thank you, I’m blessed. And sometimes it takes staring in sickness, staring and contrast, staring and misery to fully appreciate the faculties, the abilities, the situations and circumstances that have orchestrated in our lives, that make us as whole as we are.

And so there’s orientation as I kind of referenced a while ago, where our desires and our wants are sometimes surrounded and built up upon the foundation of what you don’t have. What I’m trying to do with this episode is I’m trying to reach within you and let you know how, how awesome your life is, as you begin to examine it and turn over some of the stones. It’s awesome right now, obviously, goals and desires and dreams are always going to sit right a little bit outside of your reach. But what is here, no matter where you are, no matter what you may be experiencing, is amazing. And some people have the scarcity mentality, some people can look and stand within and be entrenched within Grace itself, and see nothing but scarcity.

And that’s, that’s not healthy. Because there always be a comparison going on, where you feel a certain level of lacking and emptiness, and hey, it’s toxic. We know those people, we talk to those people, we may be related to those people, we may work with those people, we may be that person. So another question I want to ponder is, why do they hang around if no gesture is offered, or recognition of their presidents. So some of these unacknowledged blessings hang around, because what I call the highest aspiration is unconditional love. And sometimes our family continues to bless us to see something within us that we may not have the perspective to see in ourselves. And when I go back to to even acknowledging that divine creator, has that unconditional love and will continue to bless us.

Because there is something within us. And I’ll say it to you too, there is something uniquely within you that you’re here to share with the world. You’re one of one, there will never be another copy. If you create something if you create a child or a family, they are not you you are a one of one and so are they and you have within you the ability to affect and effect the world in a way that only you have been destined to do. What happens when we begin to change our orientation towards these blessings, and open our hearts to acknowledge and become fully engulfed in the radiance of our gifts, and our grace. When we do that, when we can fully acknowledge these blessings, when we can turn and look into the light of our life.

It becomes a little lighter. One of the phrases that really came to me years ago when I was doing writing and journaling is this notion of being light hearted. Being light hearted. There’s this Egyptian mural hieroglyphs where the heart is weighed against the scale against the feather. And if your heart is heavy, it is consumed by the crocodile and the crocodile represents logic and intellect and all that. And if it’s lighted in the feather then you’re great instead passage into heaven. The analogy shouldn’t fall lightly upon you. So when we are heavy hearted, when we’ve allowed the worries and concerns and our orientation to be that which is scarce or a lot filled mentality, we are heavy hearted, we have to orchestrate the details in our mind.

That’s what we have to do. And we become consumed by our logic, our rationalization, keeping it real and looking pessimistically into the world for reasons that support our beliefs. And so the only thing you’re going to find with a scarcity mentality is things that justify it. And excuse me as we begin to acknowledge and, and just relish how blessed we are. Just look around your life, how blessed you are, look where you’ve been. And look at that journey to get there where you are now, you are blessed. Fill the fact that you’ve woken up this morning, you are blessed, there’s another day, another opportunity to truly live your purpose, to start over to hit reset. To begin again, that is a blessing. To go each day, and meet somebody and have the opportunity for your mind to be blown that is a blessing.

So as we turn towards the orientation, of acknowledging the blessings, there becomes an overwhelming avalanche of things to feel appreciative for. Man, that’s just a little bit of a something of a little idea that I’ve been playing with, since I woke up this morning. And I want to share that with you. I want you to examine your life for all the things that you are blessed with. The books were geniuses and and modern scholars and thinkers have, have formed their ideas and, and share it with you for $10 $10 for somebody’s greatest life experiences. People have been practicing and studying music their whole lives and congeal it into a 60 Minute. Performance is a blessing that’s, that’s the gifts that people have to share with us.

You have people that know the balance and composition of great dishes and food. We’re willing to serve it to us. We’re blessed. We get to experience the best of the best of the best on a daily basis. That’s the world I live in. What world do you live in? You live in a two but can you begin to acknowledge this bigger, broader, more expansive world? You’re blessed. You have the blessings to go to any kind of institution. You have the blessings to learn skills and talents on YouTube. You are blessed. Begin to relish roll around in it. Share it with others understand it. You’re blessed.
