Before you listen

There is value in a fresh, youthful perspective. As people age, the foot comes off the gas and we begin to coast, and inevitably the youth come up and overtake the dominant players. With all their amassed resources, it seems counterintuitive that the big boys wither and erode.

Life runs in cycles: spring to winter, birth to decline, the startup to the legacy business. The young lack experience and make up for it in energy and curiosity. With experience we get efficient and don’t want to waste any rounds. Kodak invented the first digital camera and was the last company into the digital camera revolution, because the ground was shifting under its feet. Youthfulness, in this talk, is a state of mind we can pair with the experience we have gathered.

Listen for the person who decided in the early 90s not to jump on PowerPoint and still can’t fully use Microsoft Office. Don’t become that guy.

From the talk

  • Growth is an attitude, growth is a mindset and growth is a state of being that we check into on a daily basis.

  • If we stay hungry, there is no limitation to what we can accomplish.

  • For us, each of us, you and I, the ground is always perpetually shifting.

Sit with this

Take some time and jot them down.

  1. Who are you running with?
  2. What are we leaving behind?
  3. How do we understand our value in what we're doing?

in today’s episode, what we’re going to be talking about is drumroll is the value of experience and the value of an experience sounds like a contradiction to guess what it is. So as we begin, I’d like you to strap it security or safety bill, open your mind to be prepared to take some notes. And at the very least, they can be mental in the event of decompression, and oxygen masks will automatically appear before. If you are traveling with a child or somebody that requires your assistance. Make sure you secure your got the right to help anybody else. Now that we got our safety procedure out of the way, let’s jump into the episode. So welcome back you guys. Before I really continue, I must admit this episode represents a space in time where I got curious.

And I love that feeling of curiosity. And the only thing that I’ve learned to do in the fits of curiosity is to lean in and engage. And looking at this idea of a fresh perspective, the value of the inexperience and the value of the experience, you begin to notice the cycles of things, and how the patterns of life continue to keep going year after year, week after week, day after day. We have even in life we have we have spring, summer, fall, winter, and put that on a loop. And in our lives we have heard growth, maturity, decline in depth. And in business, you have that startup phase, before you become an established business, then you become a legacy business. And then eventually the decline said said And so understanding these phases of life and and the values of each of the skills that you get on each level, how do we disrupt that?

How do we disrupt that? Not only just disruptive, but how do we understand our value in what we’re doing? Because our minute there’s something to be said about youthfulness, right? And the one thing that youthfulness lack is experience, but they make up for it and energy they make up for it and curiosity they make For in the levels of innovation. So who are you running with, at a young age, you’re running with other individuals trying to make a name for themselves. So therefore, they’re willing to stay up with you to all ends of the night to establish a venture, they’re willing to put in the work put in the time to craft the space. So this is a structure, building space. You’re overcompensating with effort with action, even if the direction is not in place.

But one thing that happens is you begin to establish yourself, not only just yourself, but as business and life begins to establish yourself as well. You pull back, you shoot more shots, that’ll hit the target. You don’t want to waste any rounds of ammunition. Any time on your calendar, there’s a level of efficiency that you now in fear. And so the process continues, and what are your friends look like? What are your peers look like? At that middle, that experience growth phase, they pull their feet off the gas, they’ve realized how to be really efficient. What has left, what are we leaving behind, we’re leaving that and child mind behind. And as we start to slow down, as we start to understand the shortest route between two points is a straight line, some of that edge of our usefulness is lost.

And we surround ourselves with that same energy to hopefully give us a boost. So while there is value in an experience, there’s also value in experience. And one thing that I want to share with you guys today is that what made you great on both sides of the spectrum, you can possess all the ones and so to be useful is not to have only lived on this planet, for a short duration of time. usefulness is an attitude. You fullness is an attitude to innovate, it is an attitude to disrupt it is an attitude to see beyond what we are calling the creature comforts of today. Because if we stay hungry, there is no limitation to what we can accomplish. You have individuals out there like Elon Musk, Elon could have stopped this paper.

He didn’t have to. He went on to create Tesla, he went on to create his I want to say it’s SpaceX and all these different ventures that are pushing forward, not only just technology, but humanity. So often in big business, you have the cases where you’ve established yourself as a market leader, a dominant market leaders and something happens. A new guy gets a new guy with the resilience with the innovations who’s willing to really push the market forward in ways that you become complacent and lazier, you fought so hard to number one, establish and maintain your market share. We forgot about growth. And growth is an attitude growth is a mindset and growth is a state of being that we check into on a daily basis.

Or else at least I hope you weren’t. So in the in the world of shoes, you have upstarts, you have the legacy brands, you have the Nikes, the Adidas, and Reebok. But then 10 years ago, comes this brand called Under Armour. And now it is competing with the big dogs. Because one thing that doesn’t change is our continuingly evolving, preferences. And if your business if you or who you’re running with, are unwilling to meet those demands, somebody’s going to slide it. So to bring it back to encompasses and then to share very clearly with you one more time. The value in your experience can be made up for by your enthusiasm, right? By your ability to just have the energy to engage in finding the solutions to the ever present challenges of the day.

Your curiosity, the curiosity, breeze, Questions and Questions breed new path Ways to open up and enlighten new discoveries, which will eventually become innovations. Another thing that you’re inexperienced has as a benefit is, you are not stuck to laggard old thinking ideas. There is somebody out there right now, who said, You know what, maybe in the early 90s, and I’m not jumping on PowerPoint. And to this day, they still do not know how to fully utilize the Microsoft Office Suite. Don’t become that guy. As I shared with my wife, often, there’s a couple of people out there, about three degrees from evaporating into a relevancy. And what we can do as we’ve acquired this experience, as we’ve been on the road and seeing the things that we have, we’re actually in a better position to prevail, we’re in a better position to prevail, if we keep what makes the youthful, youthful, in US perpetually, ready to change, ready to shift, ready to still be agile, and ready to react to the world in a way that benefits everybody.

So as we tune in to the cycles of life, as we understand the process, from birth to maturity, to decline, and to death, we understand that the youth will eventually take over, and they too, will eventually be taken over by you. But if we continue, during our tenure during our time to embrace the qualities of which the youth possess, paired with the experience that life has given us, we become an indomitable foe, we become responsive to the needs and expectations that the demand of the marketplace is placing on us. We become agile, we understand that there needs to be a balance between r&d, that aspect of where we’re looking beyond what is and trying to find the intersection of what is and what will be.

Right now, you can look at any index of stocks, you can look at any company in the Fortune 500 100, even 50. And what is going on right now, is that there are many blind spots. Apple has blind spots. If it doesn’t, if it doesn’t continue to innovate, there’ll be a new company, ready to sweep in and do something that Apple should have done. That’s no different than the record industry should have come together to create iTunes and Apple Music. There was a blind spot Steve Jobs came in to fill the gap. Similar to how Amazon revolutionized the book industry and also created Kindles whole different Publishers Marketplace, a blind spot at a gap was filled. borders were yet. And last but not least, the most infamous story of this is Kodak Eastman, Kodak Eastman invented the first digital camera, yet they were the last company in the whole digital camera revolution.

They had all this existing business, this old dominant market share and didn’t realize that the ground was shifting underneath their feet. And for us, each of us, you and I, the ground is always perpetually shifting. Are we agile enough, confident enough and brave enough to begin to step forward into that new stable platform. But it takes a youthfulness, that curiosity that fills YaSM now hunger, that passion, said resilience, that fortitude. And like I said that youthfulness is not it’s not about age, it’s not about a window of years. It is about a state of mine that we tap into. That we can also come and put together with the experience that we’ve gathered and garnered up to this point. Together, we become an unstoppable combination.

This is a food for thought to chew on. It represents a lot of the stuff going on in my mind as I look into the world. As we wind that, I like to thank each of you for coming back week after week and listening to halftime talks. And before you get out of here you turn off your phone or you go on to your next activity.
