Before you listen

Don’t confuse being lost with needing direction. The talk opens with a traveler in a remote country town who stops in a village, sure he’s lost. A villager asks whether he knows where he is and where he wants to be. He knows both. He isn’t lost. He just needs directions.

In many areas of life we are that traveler. We know where we are, we just may not want to be there. From that starting point, with some ambition, you can chart the path, and Marcus Garvey’s definition of ambition is read along the way. The path has to run from where you are, so following somebody else’s plan for you is the surest way to get lost. Solicit advice, then make your own plan, including who you need to become to get there.

Listen for the line the talk closes on: your life can’t go according to plan if you don’t have one. The road will have highs and lows, and it won’t be a straight line.

From the talk

  • We're not lost. We know where we are. Except we just really may not want to be there.

  • We're not trying to get there from where somebody else is. We have to get there from where we are.

  • The time that you're guaranteed to get lost is when you follow somebody else's plan for you.

Sit with this

Take some time and jot them down.

  1. Do you know where you are?
  2. Do you know where you want to be?

One day a traveling remote country town convinced that he was on the wrong road came to a halt in the village. Calling one of the villages to the car window. He said, “Friend. I need help. I’m lost.” The villager looked at him for a moment and said, “Do you know where you are?” He said, “Yes. I saw the name of your town as I entered.” The village nodded his head. Do you know where you want to be? He said yes, the traveler replied. And naming his destination, the villager looked away for a moment. He said you’re not lost. You just need directions. So like the traveler, in many areas of our life, we resemble the traveler. We’re not lost. We know where we are. Except we just really may not want to be there.

But knowing where you are as a starting point, and say from where you are to where you want to be, we can chart the man if we have the ambition to do it. One of my favorite quotes on ambition comes to us from Marcus Garvey, “Ambition is the desire to move forward and improve one’s condition. It is the burning flame that lights the life of an individual makes them see himself in another state. So be ambitious is to be great in mind and soul to want that which is worthwhile and strive for to go without looking back reaching to that which gives satisfaction.” So in charting our path, it is as easy as pointing in a direction of your destination and moving forward. We don’t have to start from the beginning.

We’re not trying to get there from where somebody else is. We have to get there from where we are. You’re gonna have to drown out all that distraction. Everybody’s gonna have an opinion about where you should go from here based upon their own desires and ambitions. Based upon your desires and ambitions, you need to create your plan. You need to know what resources it’s going to take to get there, how long it may take to get there, who you need to become in order to get there. What is your plan? Your life can’t go according to plan. If you don’t have one. The time that you’re guaranteed to get lost is when you follow somebody else’s plan for you. Only you can come up with your plan.

You can solicit advice. You can solicit opinion. You can solicit best practices. If you try to follow somebody else’s plan, you’re gonna get lost because it’s not based upon your two points of relativity. You know, I’m not going to go and look at where you are in chart my path from there. The path has to be from where you are now to where you want to be. Am I saying that it’s going to be easy? Am I saying that your road ahead will be paved with with rose petals and people cheering you on? No. It is going to be a row filled with highs, filled with lows, filled with different kinds of experiences. Who said the shortest distance between two points straight line. Life was gonna guide you in all different kinds of directions to get you to where you need to be. So go ahead and get that plan because like I said life can’t go according to plan if you don’t have one.
