Before you listen

I asked a friend what I should do for a New Year’s episode and he said, do the anti-resolution. So this is a different spin on resolutions: before building new habits, decide what you will stop doing.

If we’re honest, a lot of what we hope for in January spills over the edge by mid-February, and many of this year’s goals were on last year’s list. The talk treats the new year like cleaning out a closet: some things got you here, and you have to let them go to make room. For me that means less sugar and beer, and fewer conversations that don’t lead to anything. It asks for an inventory first, through reflection, and a plan for the days you slip.

Listen for the line from jiu-jitsu and MMA fighters about everyone having a plan until the first punch, and the question that follows: can you be forgiving toward yourself on a bad day and still keep the train on the tracks?

From the talk

  • These are things that I'm willing to stop doing in order to perform at my best.

  • Resolution is a process, a process of becoming, a process of both growing and pruning away the dead debris.

  • You have to let go of some things in order to embrace more of who you really are.

Sit with this

Take some time and jot them down.

  1. What is your plan when you slide?
  2. Is there a level of earnest effort that you're willing to give this year?
  3. How will you know when you're doing well, if you haven't set those standards?

it is 2007 teen you just got finished hanging out with your family for the holidays, unwrapping gifts, traveling across the country, possibly, and drinking that champagne on New Year’s. And guess what guys? This is a new year. And I was challenged. I was personally challenged with the idea of how can I give you something for the New Year give you some food for thought to ruminate, to think about to contemplate and to move forward with that can really help you. And I reached out to a friend because I was like, Hey, I don’t know what I should do for my new year’s episode. And he said, Do the anti resolution. And I began to think about that. And today guys, we are going to shake the cage shake the proverbial cage, we are going to disrupt even how we look at New Year’s because if we’re honest with ourselves, if we are truly honest with ourselves, we know that a lot of what we hope for spills over the edge.

And we’re little less effective come mid February, mid March, mid April, and then we just adopt new goals and then 50 or 50% of those fall over the edge. Well, let’s do something different. Let’s begin with the anti resolution. So let me explain that. The anti resolution is we’re deconstructing resolution. So similar to the end of the year, you look in your closet. And in order to allow in new habits, new behaviors, we have to give away certain things, some of the things that aren’t serving us anymore. Some of the things that they were cute, they got us here it was enough to impress the crowd that I was hanging in. But now I want to step my game up and in order to make room for improvement.

You got to let stuff go. So this year 2017 is the year of letting the unnecessary go, before we even begin to try to construct new habits, new behaviors, the ground can’t be shaky. And in order to clear that ground, we have to excavate, we have to excavate all the unneeded stuff away. So what things here we go the anti resolution? What will you stop doing this year? And that begins right now. Will you stop? I don’t know. So so me personally, my anti resolution will be to continue stop eating a lot of sugar, refined carbohydrates, drinking beer, not necessarily that I don’t like these things, I just know my body isn’t always as responsive. And it undermines certain fitness goals, I look at my closet, I need to get rid of things.

So I can make space for the new stuff. So the anti resolution, when you look at it is not saying this is what I will do. It’s saying the opposite of that. These are things that I’m willing to stop doing in order to perform at my best. For instance, I can discontinue suspend, stop making assumptions that I know what’s going on in somebody else’s life on a broader narrative, be it America, the red states, the blue states, be it outside the country, other ethnicities, other religions, I could stop doing that, I can stop having conversations that don’t lead to anything and recoup that time back, I can go out and eat and leave food on my plate after I’m full. And so what I’m asking you to do are to look at the key areas that are driving your performance and ask yourself, which of the activities and how I’m contributing right now can be left off.

But before we begin to wholesale, throw things overboard, we must take inventory of what’s onboard, and then take a look through reflection. As I say, in my conversations nowadays, reflection, is the only way that we can see ourselves in the world, be it a mirror, or pull the water or the critical self analysis that happens in our journals. Our pads are our conversations with people who are really invested in who we are. So what will be required. I know it’s January, I know you probably have your resolutions, but I want you to understand that resolution is a process a process of becoming a process of both growing and pruning away the dead debris that is preventing this tree this fruit, this plant to truly blossom into its utmost full potential.

How will you know when you’re doing well, if you haven’t set those standards? So the anti resolution is asking you to take your behavior into consideration as a core component of your overall progress. It means in the areas of health if I instead of using some means and transportation, what if I walk? What if I stopped taking the easy way out on something that I know is beneficial to me? What if I can stop letting things pile up? Because I’m gonna be honest with you, I know you I’m looking at you. I’m looking at your face right now when I say resolution, and I know you have your list of 10 things you want to do this year and I guarantee you a significant percentage of those things are on your list last year.

But having the goal itself is not is not the journey folks has to have a plan. And in listening to jujitsu fighters and MMA fighters and and listening to some of their podcasts and and being really enthralled and interested in their domains, one of the things that you hear all the time, every body has a plan until they get punched in the face for the first time. What is your plan when you slide? Can you be forgiving and understanding to yourself and still Keep the train on the tracks. Can you look at yourself in a forgiving nature and understand that I understand that this is a broader process, I can begin where I am and make strides as I continue to cultivate the vision of who I know I’m capable of being with where I’m at right now.

If we do not do that, if if that is something that we fail to truly understand that we will look back and realize that our New Year’s push only went to the first week of February, luckily, it might make it to MLK Day. But will it make it to march? Will it make it? April? Will it make it to May, and then all we’re doing is looking at New Year’s is the opportunity to get on the bandwagon of looking at ourself when this process requires perpetual focus, analysis and attention. So what’s your plan? When you slide a little bit? What’s your plan on a bad day? So, the whole system doesn’t fall apart, it becomes all I made it to January 30. Now, you are capable of more the capacity within you is deeper than you truly realize.

Is there a level of earnest effort that you’re willing to give this year? Because like in previous episodes, the capacity for this current year to be amazing exist? It is right within your hands the possibility to take on to do new to experience more is right before you because you are you are working from the leading edge of all the previous yesterday’s to previous New Years. The strengths acquired the skills acquire the value acquired you are all that culmination resting in one person. What are you going to do with it? Or what are you going to stop doing it to allow it to reveal itself? In a more routine basis? And answers within you? I can’t give you that answer. I’m challenging you. This is my challenge to you for 2017 You have to let go of some things in order to embrace more of who you really are.
