Offering the Invitation

What if I conceptualize my words and actions as an invitation?

Before you listen

You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. How many times have we offered sound insight, only to watch someone step right over it? We’ve been the horse at the watering hole too. After a recent storm of wanting someone to hear me, I tried a new approach: treating my words and actions as an invitation.

The talk calls this a sobering conclusion, and the sobriety is surrender. We cannot control or manipulate anyone into understanding. The best we can do is invite them to the show and let them respond. I’ve been guilty of throwing everything at it and hoping something sticks. With age it can feel like sitting atop the highest tree, seeing the whole terrain, while the traveler on the ground sees only the tree in front of them.

Listen for the turn at the end, where the invitation runs both ways: recognize the invitations you give, and the ones that have been given to you.

From the talk

  • The most that we can do is invite them to an understanding.

  • Like a movie, the invite is the trailer. The invite is not the full thing. It is glimpses at possibility.

  • Give the benefit of the doubt to those who've yet to catch up, because we didn't get here overnight.

Welcome to another episode of Halftime Talks. My name is Rahim Rasul, and you’re listening to the podcast. We recognize that in the middle of our game of life, whether up by 10 or actually down by 20, we all need halftime talks to uplift us, inspire us and challenge us to bring that level of performance it’s gonna take to win this game. Go.

Man, wow, we’re back. Look at that. And you know how we like to get started, and it’s a little bit of appreciation, get our mind right, money right, ready for war. So in today’s appreciation, I want to appreciate the pathos those moments of defeat, where we feel boxed in and there’s nowhere to go but forward, something beautiful happens. That silver lining that we look for is the fact that we are clear, we are driven, and we create this unquenchable thirst to propel forward in a way that would not have been possible without the pathos. Now I’m not saying live there, but I am saying, gather the treasures that are there. While we’re here, I appreciate it. I would not stand as tall. I would not pursue what I pursue without that patho. So instead of resenting it, relish it. That is another appreciation.

Before we dive into the episode, I want to thank you guys for continuing to be with me. Enjoy me along on this halftime talks adventure. Ultimately, we’re bending our perspective and expanding our perception into ideas, concepts that can enable us to perform better, to bring our wherewithal to the game, and along the way, I’ve learned a lot about myself. I’ve learned a lot about teaching, influencing and creating impact. And in today’s episode, I want to basically share with you the idea that I’ve resigned myself to in terms of teaching. And while it may still be fresh, and I will revisit it and sharpen it, I am giving you the ultimate essence for this episode.

Therefore, without further ado, strap in your seat belts. Relax, take a few deep breaths, and I think we’re ready to dive into the episode. How about you? So here we go. Let go. You.

If you know the phrase, I invite you to finish it, you can lead a horse to water, but you cannot make it. There you go. You guessed it, you can’t make it drink. Over the years, I’ve savored the make it. There you go. You guessed it, you can’t make it drink. Over the years, I’ve savored the role as a teacher to those I’ve instructed those who I’ve been capable and fortunate to share some of the findings along my path with. I see myself as a philosopher, a student of life, a curious individual, and to amass some of the findings along the way. I think our first desire is to share it.

One of the interesting dynamics that happen is no matter how many progressions or levels of understanding our personal investments, the way that we see, the clarity can never be fully expressed. And no matter how clear, how far, how broad or expansive we see, our students, our our pupils, our mentees, those which we want to assist in their full development for we see their light in ways that they’ve yet to begin to own and accept. We see how far how high they can fly. No. Matter where they are in the process, our knowledge does not immediately transfer, and that alone can be frustrating. It can be frustrating because we, not only ourselves, have lived through it, not only because we have played all the scenarios out in our mind, if given a chance, what we would do differently, and I’ve come to a sobering conclusion, yes, I put emphasis on the word sobering.

The most that we can do, the most that we can do is invite them to an understanding. And I reemphasize the word sobering, because part of the sobriety of understanding is encapsulated in this notion of surrender, no matter how clear we see, no matter what we see, no matter when we see it. We cannot control, we cannot manipulate, and we cannot create impact that is not receptive to it. The best we can do is be ourselves and emanate our light of passion, not from a sense of fear, dread or reluctant expectation, which I call fear. We have to see that possibility and give it a chance to grow and in order to really create that synchronicity, that synergy that enlivens the process of learning, the process of understanding, the process of acquiring the skills and the enthusiasm and that passion that we see in so many other areas of life.

The best that we can do is invite them to the show. And like a movie, the invite is the trailer. The invite is not the full thing. It is glimpses at possibility, because for true transference and understanding and passion and enthusiasm to occur, they must respond to the invitation. And I’ve been guilty. I’ve I’ve been guilty of throwing everything at it and hoping something sticks, while all of that is doing is summoning a lot of controversion in the individual. So now I’ve discovered this way, and I invite you to this understanding as well is that we get really out of balance when we see we’ve offered and they just step over something and you see it for its true value and its true essence, while it appears To be overlooked, and all you want to do is like, Yo, just listen to me.

Give this the attention that it deserves. But the invitation and the reception and the response to that invitation is an interest, activated, cultivated and summoned within them, which may create a resonance or may just be a bookmark for the future. You know, I can lead a horse to water, but I can’t make it drink over the course of the weekend, I told a story of like it feels with age that we sit atop, perched atop the highest tree, and we want to communicate the pitfalls of the landscape to the traveler there on the ground. And we can see far and wide. We can see the terrain, and yet, all they see before them is the tree that they’re in front of, and we’re offering this direction while they can only navigate to.

What’s in front of them, without the perspective of what will come. So I trust in my students ability that, if not today, then one day, one day, that that synchronicity, that coincidence, that inspiration, that rendezvous, that meeting of minds, will occur. All I could do now is invite you put a little slickness on the invite without throwing myself out of balance in order to find it so recognize the invitations that you give, and also recognize the invitations that have been given to you, incorporate that into a process of research and development, to understand, to expand, to begin to embody what stands before you, and ultimately give the benefit of The doubt to those who’ve yet to catch up, because we didn’t get here overnight.

We had falls, we had scrapes, we had not so good stretches and cycles, and we had some, some high ones too. And all that gave way to the clarity that brought us here today. And so to you future generations that’ll move and shake with the understanding that I so want to share. I give you the benefit of the doubt to live your experience fully, trust your instinct, go forward and seek joy, and you know, I’m sure the rendezvous will surprise and delight you. So this is my invitation to conversation. This is my invitation for you to explore more of the halftime talks library. This is my invitation that one day, our paths will cross and it will be fun.
