Halftime Talks Episode 28 The Field
The Birthday that Changed My Life
What do birthdays truly mean?
Before you listen
I recorded this one on my birthday to tell the story of an earlier one. To me a birthday is the odometer clicking another digit, and the odometer doesn’t show where you are on the road. One birthday opened me up to more of my possibilities, because it is one thing to hope and believe, and another to expect things and experience them.
In 2006 I was living in France, and a couple of days after my birthday I woke up in Lisbon with maybe 15 euros. I sent my friend off to a museum, took my journal to a park and spent almost two hours cleaning up my beliefs about money. I came back expecting the solution to show itself. Back in France, in line for a train ticket, I surrendered, and a stranger walked up and handed me one.
Listen for the turn to revelation near the end. It was a 10 euro train ticket, and I still have it.
From the talk
This moment doesn't define who I am. It might show where I am now, but it doesn't show where I am going.
Clean up your own resistance to the subject and the way will be presented.
Revelation means that you are now aware of what's already been there the whole time.

Today’s gonna be a special episode. It is my birthday today. And to commemorate that day, I wanted to tell a story from a previous birthday of how getting into that Senate place made everything work out. So one of the things that people know me for saying the phrase, especially on birthdays, another lap around the sun, and what do birthdays truly mean. So me I have a very interesting relationship with birthdays I say it’s just the odometer kicking a certain mileage. And if the odometer kicks a certain mileage, it doesn’t reflect where you are on the road. And it’s anything can happen at any point in the journey. And so cool, I’ve I’ve clicked another digit on the odometer, and another lap around the sun. It doesn’t define where you should be in life, what you should have achieved at this point, it is a good reference point to certain times in your life and certain things that you may go through.
And so in 2006, I was living abroad and traveling with a dear friend. And I was making the mistake of taking on too much expense for myself without sharing the wealth to other people. I got myself into a situation in Lisbon, Portugal, where I was plumb out of cash. And I was not sure how I was gonna get to the airport more or less home the next day. And I woke up agitated it was a couple of days, I think it was like two days after my birthday, I woke up agitated. I’m living in France, I don’t have any money, I’m not sure when the next check is going to come. I’m calling people or email and people go, we’ll go ahead and put that deposit in.
So I woke up agitated, and I had a friend with me. And the first thing I told my friend was, hey, go ahead and have a great day. And let’s meet back here at 12. Because I’m not going to be any good to you being frustrated and agitated. So I let her go, she goes to Museum, and I pick up my journal, and I go to a park it was a couple blocks away from our hotel. And I proceeded to write and write and clean up my beliefs about money, clean up my beliefs about money in relationship to me. Because at this point, I probably had maybe 15 euros in my pocket and accessible to my bank account. And I was like how am I going to get you know, the plane ticket was bought.
But how was I going to get from the airport to garden Lord, which was the train station right next to my house. And I didn’t know it my friend would have helped me out. But I I was looking for some deeper, broader, broader answer. And so I wrote and I wrote and the more I wrote, the more I released that angst that was tied around the subject. The more that I understood who I was in relationship to my divine possibility, the more I wrote, I understood that this is only this is only a moment in this moment doesn’t define who I am. It might show where I am now, but it doesn’t show where I am going. So I wrote and it took maybe an hour and a half, almost two hours to write all this stuff.
So I head back to the hotel. I feel like a new person. I had unwaged a lot of the angst a lot of that anxiety and a lot of that fear. And I was like you know what? Something will be revealed to me. So I go about my day. I even pay for my friend’s subway ticket to the beach because I knew at one point the sun Lucian would reveal itself. And I knew this, I didn’t hope for this, I didn’t have faith witness, I expected this and moving into that place of expectation. I knew it would all work out. So we enjoyed ourselves at the beach, we swam in the ocean. In had a great time, I managed to make my way back to the hotel and woke up and went to the, to the airport, airport to France.
And now I’m in France at the train station, without the physical means the financial means to get that ticket, I’m looking at my friend. But still I expect the universe to supply me with what I’m looking for. So now we’re standing in line to buy the train ticket and my friends looking at me. And I’m looking at her and I’m like, yo, I might need you to take care of my ticket. And she looks back and said, That’s not a problem. But give me a second. I told her, give me a second. So the line is slowly moving forward. And I’m like universe, God, show me away. And the line is moving forward. At this point, I’m not sure where my mind was at. But my optimism was still stable, but it was fighting a battle of time.
So as I sit there, as people are moving forward and forward in that line, I surrender. I’m like, hey, it’s either gonna happen or it’s not. And in that second, this African American gentleman comes up to me. And he says, Hey, do you need a train ticket? I was floored. I was like, yes. He said, this train ticket is good for all of France. I mean, all of Paris, excuse me, today, it was a it was like a cart, the orange the jewel like one day ticket. It’s like this guy just appeared out of nowhere and handed me a ticket. So all that expectation paid off in that one moment. Oh, that belief, all that writing, all that getting centered. All that letting go of the burden, I surrendered to the problem.
And I was met with the answer. So this is my birthday in 2006. And I still have that ticket. I still have that journal entry. And every now and then I look back at it not for what was written. But for what statement that was to me, what a powerful inner statement that was of clean up your own resistance to the subject and the way will be presented. Now, I know there may be some people who don’t believe in the terms universe or you know, all this other kind of stuff. But once you get into that place of expectation, anything is possible doors that were once closed will open before you opportunities that once evaded, you will make themself reveal to you. And Revelation, and I’ll probably talk about this in a future episode.
But revelation doesn’t mean that something is brought to you. It doesn’t mean that things are presented for you. Revelation means that you are now aware of what’s already been there the whole time. And the number one variable holding you back from actually receiving the gifts that are prepared for you are some of your ideas or your beliefs that contradict each other, that don’t coincide with who you have become. And I guarantee you if you’re listening to halftime talks, it’s you have a desire, you have a meaningful, actual vision for your life. And that vision for your life has preceded you in this opening all these opportunities for you to become who you’ve already concluded you are. The road is littered with the debris of our own negatively habitual beliefs.
Okay, And so this whole scenario of my birthday was me coming back to who I am. Me opening up the way. And while I do agree that this was just a 10 Euro train ticket and it meant the world to me. It meant the world to me. It showed me that you can scale and a lot of other things are possible.
