Theoretical to Actuality

How do we take our ideals of the world and integrate them into our actualized behavior?

Before you listen

Halftime Talks came back after some time away with this one. It looks at the biggest difference behind the rise in my performance in 2018: how to take our ideals of the world and integrate them into how we actually behave.

Physics has the theoretical physicist, who conceptualizes how matter might operate, and the applied physicist, who goes into the lab to render that theory into actuality. This year I took my applied philosophy into the lab. What separates the two worlds is vulnerability and courage: being honest with yourself when you’re leaving some stuff on the table. Seeds I planted last year are blossoming now, and some I planted in January may take who knows how long.

Listen for the part about acting in the face of the unknown, going into the fog with faith that you’ve prepared enough to go further than before. The highs and lows stay. We learn to ride them like waves.

From the talk

  • The difference between that applied world and the theoretical world is vulnerability and courage.

  • If it's fear that's holding you back, address it.

  • You find that you not in the closet of your own contemplation. You find it in the world of things, of diversity of thought, of people, of situations, of context.

Welcome back to another episode of Halftime Talks. My name is Rahim, and you’re listening to the podcast where we recognize that in the middle of our game of life, whether you’re up by 10 or down by 20, we all need halftime talks to assist us, inspire us, challenge us to bring that level of performance that you and I both know it’s gonna take to win the game.

So we’re back. It’s another episode of halftime talks, man, it feels so good to be here today, talking to you guys, sharing with you and like, what we do is we bring it to the level of appreciation. And so today is going to be no different. And what I want to appreciate is time. Time is this beautiful thing that we get to move through from the moment we are born to the moment that we will leave this earth. Time is is a render, it’s a stage. It’s where we can perform. It gives us perspective earlier times and later times, the differences life experience. And that’s what time provides.

Time is that element that that can open up the seed that is an idea and allow it to bloom into its natural state. So sometimes we don’t have perspective, sometimes we don’t have enough information, and that is what time can provide. So today I want to appreciate time. I want to appreciate the time I have, even with you, the time that you’re spending with your ears, and the times that we will spend together in the future, until that time, take care of this time. So we’re back with another episode of halftime talks, and in this episode, I cannot necessarily say what we are going to talk about.

This is going to be more impromptu for you than it will be scripted, and otherwise I have, I don’t even know how to say it’s been a while since I recorded for you guys. It’s been a while since I’ve published, and I definitely want to come off the chest Express where I’ve been, what I’ve been doing, what we have in store, how we’re going to continue to evolve. We’ve done 150 plus episodes, and this will be another one, and I do want to bring the authenticity that you come back for, and even if this is only me listening, then cool. So strapping your seatbelts, open up your mind and prepare to take some notes or do whatever, just here we go.

It’s more than fair to say that we’re halfway through the year. I know we still got June to go, but for the most part, we are halfway through 2018 and 2018 has been an amazing, fabulous year, and it’s so interesting to see the seeds of goals that you put forth back in the day that are beginning to germinate and flourish and flower and blossom today. There are seeds I put in last year that I’m experiencing now, and there are seeds that I put in January that I may not even begin to see them germinate for who knows how long. And it’s cool, because what what those prior sees that I’m experiencing right now represent is an ambition you have ambitions.

I have ambitions. We have goals. We have desires. We have dreams. We have unrealized potentiality within us. And one of the things that separates me, or that I find unique to myself, is there is an intellectualness about me, a thinking, a curiosity, a rendering. There is a philosopher aspect of me who even wants to do this podcast. The part that I’m bridging, the part that this year has presented me and I I share with you is to bridge the theoretical and the actual. Now, back in the day when somebody would talk about an academic pursuit like you have physics per se, you have a theoretical physicist, an actual physicist, a applied physicist, excuse me, and one conceptualizes the possibilities of our universe of matter and how it how it through physics operates.

And you have another who goes into a lab that tries to render out that theory into actuality. This year, I’ve taken my applied philosophy and I’ve began to challenge and render myself the difference, the difference and the distinction that I want to make. The difference between that applied world and the theoretical world is vulnerability and courage. And what I mean by that, what I mean by vulnerability and courage is you have to open up. You have to open up and be honest with yourself and take that appraisal assessment and you have to be willing to say when you’re not good enough, when you want to be better, when you’re leaving some stuff on the table, when you’re not playing full tilt, because what’s over There, the actuality of what your ambitions imply.

For are not interested in excuses. You either can do it or you can’t. It’s very binary. You may not have the capacity to sustain it. So you’re not there yet. And if you know you’re dogging it, if you know you’re leaving some stuff back, if you’re holding back just a little if it’s fear that’s holding you back, address it. If it’s lack of understanding. Address it. If it’s you need encouragement. Address it. If you need structures around it to support you pursuing it, address it. We make so many excuses why we stand outside of our ambitions. We call it privilege, or we call it opportunity, or we say all these different things, but we right now live in a universe.

We live in a world we live in a time where there is an abundance of intelligence of an abundance of people offering very astute perspectives that can help us bridge that gap. One thing I realize, it’s not going to just fall on my lap and as I challenge myself, as I am courageous enough to act, act in the face of the unknown, to go within the uncertainty of the fog with the faith that I’ve prepared myself enough to at least go further than I’ve done before. It gives me a strength, it gives me a level of certainty, it gives me a level of confidence that I can acquire more competence.

And as that competence rises, that competence grows. Guess what? Guess what? We bite a little bit more of we’re not trying to complete the journey in only one sitting, and as I do that, this year has taken me a little bit away from even this podcast, but it’s taken me closer and closer to understanding more of who I am, more of what I’m capable of, and more of what I want to bring to the world. In the face of that clarity, everything is possible. So I say this to you, so to personalize this for you, the cliches that people use. It’s a journey. It’s a process.

It is dot, dot, dot, dot. You fill in the blank is actually true. You are rendering your ideas into your behavior, into your experiences, into feedback, into clarity, and as you acquire that clarity, as you acquire that capacity to see, as you acquire these aspects, and you take it into your laboratory, and you form another hypothesis, and you bring it into the world, and you give it more experience, and you see your uniqueness as it relates with your ambition. You become, if you engage, if you see, if you’re aware. You become one in 7 billion. You understand how you flow, you understand how you fly.

You understand what gives you energy. You understand how to amplify that best part of you and pour in. To these things that you call your passion. And as you do that, there is nobody on earth that can hold a flame to you. There is nobody that can extinguish that kind of light. There is nobody in the world that can be you find that you and you find that you not in the closet of your own contemplation. You find it in the world of things, of diversity of thought, of people, of situations, of context. Because one thing that we cannot take away is the contrast.

One thing that we cannot take away are the highs and the lows, but as we learn how to ride One thing that we cannot take away are the highs and the lows, but as we learn how to ride those waves, we come in on our surfboard and we perform admirably. So I say this to you, this episode speaks more to understanding making peace with your ambitions, making peace with the process, making peace that this will unfold naturally as we engage with it intentionally and with that intention, that purpose and that that passion, we pour the best part of ourselves into our possibility. So while this has been an episode that may have been between a little bit of time since the last one.

I want you guys to know that I love this podcast. I love what it represents. I love who you represent. I love what we do together, and I commit to continuing giving you the tip of my sword, the sharpest ideas that I’m rendering, the the leading edge understandings that I’m cultivating. And I do that because I know that those who listen may get energy from it, may get insights from it, may get perspectives. Because ultimately, let’s all find a way to the winner’s circle, because it’s more fun to find that place with others than it is to find that place alone. Thank you for listening.
