Halftime Talks Episode 184 The Field
Wholly Different: Outside the Circle of Consensus Convention
What is it to stand apart from the conventional approach to follow your voice, even if there is not a crowd coming along with you?
Before you listen
How do we get to the point where we release the need to be understood by those who can’t understand? Living outside the normal bubble asks for a new kind of grit.
The talk sorts out the kinds of different. Some people discover their voice and stand apart. Others bend themselves into a knot, hoping convention will one day accept them back. The entrepreneur on the leading edge has no crowd: you sell, build, produce, and keep the relationships and the accounting, and when you explain it, people look at you as risky. When LeBron went to Miami and was villainized, he found solace in a quote about the Man in the Arena. For a long time I tried to sell others on the virtue of what I was doing, and while I invested in being understood, I stopped marching on the leading edge.
Listen for the close, where the talk turns inward: look for understanding among people on your same path, and make peace with yourself.
From the talk
What they consider risk you consider an essential characteristic of what you've committed to.
I was investing in being understood. I was not continuing my march on the leading edge.
If understood is something you're looking for, I would contend to you find that peace and solace, that virtue that you seek in others who are on your same path.

Which excited to be here. I hope you are, too, and the way we get that excitement started is with a little bit of appreciation. Today, I want to appreciate the hands that go into the things that I love. I’ve been journaling for over 15 plus years, and you wouldn’t really realize it, but only one pin touches the journal. So there’s a manufacturing plant. There is a visionary, an entrepreneur, a supply chain person, a distribution a truck person, somebody who supplies it to the stores that I go to all in Africa. Magical pen is ready for me, and I’m ready to touch the journal. So all those beautiful hands, the homes, the families and salaries, the food that they eat, all that I appreciate, because without you, I have to look for your pen, and that is this week’s appreciation.
Thank you for showing up at the same bat channel on the same bat station. This is halftime talks, man and it’s it’s work I could stand behind. It’s my philosophy and perspectives told not necessarily to influence or motivate you, but to give you an opportunity to see around what we may perceive as the barriers of our lives. And today, in this episode of halftime talks, I want to talk about being different as the entrepreneur or in any aspects of your lifestyle. There’s a cost to it, there’s a reward to it that I don’t think gets its proper time in the sun and as individuals on the leading edge, we it is imperative upon us to understand how to navigate these specific waters.
The world deserves it. You deserve it, and your progenies, be that those who you inspire or those who you create deserve it. So without any further ado, I am going to ask you to get your pad and pen and get your mind ready, because we’re about to get started. Here we go. You What is it to be different? What is it to stand apart from the conventional approach to follow your voice, even if there is not a crowd coming along with you. What is it? There’s different types of different pardon upon there’s the people who have discovered their voice and in pursuit of who they are and what they can contribute to the world, they stand apart as different.
There are those also who specifically want to be the contrarian yen. They take different positions for its own sake. We can call those the rebels, who have a different perspective, right? And these are distinctly two. You have the people who have discovered that they are different, and they bend themselves into a knot in hopes that they may one day be accepted by conforming back to convention. You also have some who don’t care either way, and find a peace and harmony in how they flow with the established approach methods, without any conflicting resistance popping off. You have others who wage war and think that the world should conform to how.
They see it. I am asking you today to acknowledge your different and surrender to thinking the world needs to understand you make peace with yourself. Things may change, people may come around, but you will have always been there. And the different that I’m speaking of is the entrepreneur, the person out there on a leading edge, looking to carve the image of their self into the world in an impressionable way that has yet to occur. Now, the challenge of going out there venturing in some non conventional method, is that there isn’t a crowd, and part of it is this reconciliation that you have to acquire skills to adapt to This foreign terrain, and you wish that there were others who get you, who understand the plight as an entrepreneur, understanding that not only are you going to have to sell, you’re going to have to build, you’re going to have to produce, maintain, you’re going to have to maintain relationships and accounting and all these other things that as an individual contributor in a typical Corporation, all you had to do was your job.
You try to explain that to others, and it goes over their head. They look at you as risky, but what they consider risk you consider an essential characteristic of what you’ve committed to. It’s beautiful, though, when we find our fraternity or sorority of brothers or sisters who have committed themselves to a similar road. I remember when LeBron went to Miami and he was villainized and people questioned his character and who he was as a man for making such choice, and what gave him peace and solace was a quote. I can’t remember the quote, but it’s about the Man in the Arena, which to paraphrase was, I’ll give respect to those who have picked up arms and fought in a similar arena.
Now, even for me, over time, in this world of different I would try to sell the virtue of what I was doing. I would try to conceptually frame together an understanding palatable by others of all backgrounds to understand this plight. But in that same time, I was investing in being understood. I was not continuing my March on the leading edge. If understood is something you’re looking for, I would contend to you find that peace and solace, that virtue that you seek in others who are on your same path. The beauty of being different and setting your mark in an entrepreneurial or another facet of life is that you will have a point of view.
You will have a unique position. You will grow by virtue of having to adapt to ways that others are not necessarily unable, but unwilling. Entrepreneurs are the creators of jobs, jobs that provide income to communities. Entrepreneurs take risk. They put what they believe in on the line. They put their money where their mouth is. I’ll see things on the news with executives and see and founders and to think what has to be adapted, what has to be transformed, not only in self, but in the ways that we see the world. Who could understand you watch the outlying performers, those who stand further beyond even the exceptional, and they get it in their head of what it’s going to take to succeed.
And they know, while everybody out is spinning the weekend out, enjoying themselves, they are in their laboratory. You so I would contend to you, those who are looking to be understood in your difference to for a second, let that girl you are beloved. God and you are worthy to continue to seek that what you desire, go forth and seek no joy. Everything that you are and you have experience is enough to be the worthy recipient of all that you desire. You are special. You are amazing. Let these words fuel you. Find these words within yourself, and the magic that which is you can come out to play in a way that is not accommodating of seeking understanding.
