Move as, not toward.

Certainty is the ground you move from, not the prize at the end of evidence.

In one breath

There are two ways to carry a desire. You can move toward it, gathering evidence until you feel entitled to be sure, so certainty becomes the credential at the end. Or you can move as it, acting from the certainty rather than for it. The behaviour can be identical. What changes is the direction of causation: toward pays the present for a self you do not yet have; as lets the act express the self you already are.

A percentage is discounted by a bigger percentage. A whole is not diminished by a larger whole.

From a journal entry in the summer of 2026: “Move towards certainty, and move as certainty.” The line is short because the distinction is simple. It is also easy to lose, because the two look the same from outside.

Two people prepare for the same pitch. One rehearses to become someone who deserves to be sure. Every run-through is a deposit, and the confidence is expected to clear on the day. The other rehearses as someone already committed to the work. Every run-through is the work, expressing itself. The decks match. The mornings do not.

Certainty at the bottom, not the top

The ordinary picture puts certainty at the top of a ladder of justification: you climb through evidence until you arrive. Late Wittgenstein turned that over. In On Certainty he argues that justification does come to an end, but where it ends is not a proven proposition. It is our acting. Certainty sits at the bottom, inside the action, not at the top as its conclusion. He called these held-fast certainties hinges: the door of inquiry can swing only because the hinges stay put.

That gives “move as” an epistemology rather than a mood. You can be certain about who is moving and what you have chosen, the hinge, while staying provisional about the route, the door. Full commitment to the vessel and the heading; a position fix you expect to revise.

Every level is a whole

Certainty does not arrive all at once. It deepens. It is tempting to draw that as a curve rising toward an absolute it never reaches, but a curve defined by a gap that never closes is the geometry of toward. It turns certainty back into a permanent deficit.

The better picture is nested wholes. From inside, each level is a complete register, not a fraction of a total. From outside and in retrospect, the sequence of shifts looks like a climb. Both descriptions are true at their own altitude. And a higher level does not invalidate the one before it, the way relativity does not refute Newton; it shows where Newton holds. The prior level is not wrong. It is bounded.

What rises is not the amount of certainty but the coherence it is expressed through.

The migrator’s two anchors

None of this happens in a single morning. From a journal entry on 5 July 2026: “The migrator holds two anchors until the new integrity is load-bearing.” Moving from toward to as is a migration, and migrations have an awkward middle in which both stances are partly true. You catch yourself rehearsing for permission, and then you catch yourself catching it.

This is not failure. It is how a ground gets laid. The new stance is tested in ordinary moments, and each return makes it more load-bearing. The test is not whether you feel sure. It is whether the act still needs the outcome to justify it.

The risk: certainty that cannot be corrected

Dewey’s warning applies: the quest for certainty has often been a flight from the risks of action. A person who has decided they are already certain can become impossible to correct. The guard is built into the hinge. Certainty belongs to the source and the direction; it never belongs to the forecast. Early confidence says I know what will happen. Developed confidence says I know how I will respond to what happens. The second kind can be wrong about everything external and still stand.

Why it matters for a life

Moving toward turns the present into an instalment. Moving as turns it into an expression. And once the act no longer has to earn the certainty, the running tally of what has gone in and what has come back loses its main job. That tally is the subject of the next pillar.
