Praxis, not practice.
Practice pays toward a later self. Praxis is the act already whole, and exposed to the world.
In one breath
The same scales at the piano can be practice or praxis. Practice is repetition paid now toward a self you will be later. Praxis is the act already being what practice hopes to buy. It needs two conditions: the end lives inside the act, and the act is exposed to consequence. Register without exposure is contemplation dressed as action. Exposure without register is transaction done in public. Success becomes a heading, not a wage.
Judge by
At the start
From a journal entry in October 2026: “How I practice is greater than what I practice.” The what is the domain. The how is the register you bring into it. And the how is where the life actually happens.
The end lives inside the act
Aristotle distinguished making from doing. Making, poiesis, has its end outside itself, the way building ends in a house. Doing, praxis, has its end inside itself: acting well is the point. Much of what we call practice is structurally making, and the product being manufactured is a future you. Self as buyer, world as seller, turned inward.
Praxis does not stop caring about outcomes. The Stoics drew the line precisely. Cicero’s archer does everything possible to shoot well; hitting the mark is something to be selected, not the thing that makes the shot good. The target is the skopos, the mark you aim at. The telos, the good of the act, is the quality of the aiming.
Practice is not the enemy. MacIntyre’s child, paid in sweets to learn chess, has every reason to cheat until the game’s own excellences take hold. The transactional phase is often the doorway in. The crossing is not more repetitions. It is the moment the sweets stop being the reason.
Success as a heading, not a wage
A wage arrives after the act and is its reason. Every hour becomes a cost debited against a future receipt, and the work is quietly anxious until payment clears. A heading works the other way. It is present in full at every moment of the voyage. You cannot be thirty per cent on a heading. You are on it, or correcting toward it.
Sailors also distinguish heading, where the bow points, from course over ground, where the boat actually travels once wind and current have had their say. You cannot sail straight into the wind; you tack, and every tack looks off course if you judge it by the line to the destination. Judge yourself by the track and you will over-steer forever, and the ledger comes back disguised as constant correction.
You cannot be thirty per cent on a heading.
The act must bite on the world
Register alone is not enough. Aristotle, Marx and Freire all mark praxis by contact: action that bites on the world and gets bitten back. You can hold a devotional register entirely inside a rehearsal room that never ships. That is transformational in mood and transactional in structure, because contact is still deferred to a future performance.
So shorten the distance between thinking and consequence. Move from finished thinking to minimum viable conviction: enough certainty to generate the next useful piece of evidence, not enough to defend the whole theory. Ask not what is the next task? but where is the next collision? Tasks move information around inside. Collisions bring it in from outside. Twenty small encounters with reality teach more than one large leap every six months.
Reality also interprets you
The last movement is the hardest. Deep thinkers can keep an asymmetrical relationship with experience: I interpret reality. Praxis is reciprocal: reality also interprets me. The client tells you what your offer really is. The audience tells you what communicated. The body tells you what your training philosophy actually produces. Reality is not only something intelligence acts on. It is a co-author of the intelligence.
Then turn the encounter into understanding. What did I believe? What happened? What surprised me? What principle explains the gap, and what should change? This is how experience becomes doctrine, and why a system should be built to preserve demonstrated wisdom rather than speculation.
Why it matters for a life
Praxis closes the loop. The act, exposed to the world, shows you the field again: what is already here, what you are standing on, what you were still keeping score of, where you were forcing, what was out of phase, what came through cleanly. Then the spiral turns, one ring out. No finish line.
