Halftime Talks Episode 29 The Field
Marathon Mentality
Are you going to be part of that rare fraternity of individuals who starts something and sees it through?
Before you listen
When I studied how marathon runners train, I found that the way they approach their goal goes beyond the race itself. You can’t just get up one day and decide you’re a marathon runner. The 26.2 sticker on a car window is a trophy. It says the body was capable and the training led to the finish line.
The talk treats our goals as that kind of race, one the body rejects and the mind fills with doubt. My interest began around 2003 or 2004, when P. Diddy ran the New York Marathon. Runners don’t start with 26 miles. They let their feet get used to the road, build up to 13, and train in real conditions. They’re training the mind too, because halfway through, something will say you can’t go any further.
Listen for what happens at the wall, and for the reminder that most success doesn’t show until your mid to late 30s.
From the talk
If it was an easy race, everybody would say they're a marathon runner.
Training as if it were real demands interaction with the world.
Life will show you what you're prepared for. And if you don't prepare for life, be prepared to fail.
Sit with this
- When adversity comes how do you respond?
- When somebody closes a door, do you look for the next open one?
- Are you prepared to be ready?

In this episode of halftime talks, we’re gonna be talking about something vital and important to your journey. It’s a mentality. It’s a ferocious mentality that can really take you over the edge and separate you from would be similar people still on your path. And that is Mara fawn mentality. So before we get started, I want to jump into a segment of appreciation. I’d like to appreciate and share with you my appreciation for the people in my life, that add to my curiosity to add to the depth of my intelligence brought out by my curiosity. I walk through my life and I see people and they’re great at what they do. Recently, I had the opportunity to see Savion Glover and while most of the time growing up, you see somebody in that immaculate zone and you will be like, I want to do what they’re doing.
Watching Savion Glover made me curious about what can I be as great as he is in something that I hold interest in. So I like to appreciate all of the artists, all the people, all the people who stand in that space of exceptionality and exceptionalism, who move beyond just being good and live in that space of greatness, for it continues to inspire me. I appreciate that. Let’s talk about marathon mentality. When I say marathon mentality, first listen to stand marathons. I didn’t really understand what a marathon was growing up. I remember, I first became interested in the psychology of endurance running. When I heard P. Diddy was running at City is about 2003 2004. And he joined the New York Marathon. And then I talked to a friend who wanted to compete in a marathon or run that marathon.
And he told me what take a whole entire gear to train to run that 26 miles. Because you have five K’s, you have 10 case, you have half marathons, do you got that full endurance marathon, right. And it takes a special type of training, you can’t just get up and decide. I am a marathon runner. When you see that little badge, it says 26.2 on the back of somebody’s car window, they’re not telling you. They’re not telling you that they’re marathon runners, that’s their trophy. That’s their badge. They said my body was capable of doing it. My training led me to the finish line. So in how we look at our dreams and how we look at our goals, and how we look at anything in our field of endeavor in our career or personal life, we have to approach it like a marathon, a race that your body rejects a race that your body says I can’t do a race that says that lets your mind introduce doubt.
And those are our goals. Because along the way, we’re going to receive the feedback, be it from our mind, be it from our body that I can’t, I can’t continue. So what we must do in order to really get to that finish line in order to get in a field and compete and to separate ourselves from the pack is we have to train we have to prepare. We have to we have to approach our goals and dreams from the mentality. Someone running a marathon would In training for the marathon, is about going through real life scenarios putting yourself in situations training, as if it were real. Now training as if it were real separates yourself from some other training because training as if it were real demands interaction with the world.
It demands you hitting that pavement. For the long run, no pun intended. So a marathons mentality was about it’s about diet, is about exercise is about habit is about breaking these things up into small attainable goals over your training regimen. Understanding that in order for you to complete this race, there are certain checklist of things that need to occur beforehand, you don’t wake up that first day and try to run 26 miles, you let your feet get used to the road, you get up to the point where you can run 13 miles, and they say if you can run 30 miles, you can run the whole thing. So what I’m talking about is getting into the world and training yourself in just like conditions, real world examples.
So the marathons mentality. Just like life, you’re gonna run into some walls, you are going to run into roadblocks. But luckily, in that marathons mentality in that training, and all that preparation, we’re not just preparing our body, with our diet and our exercise, we are training our mind, we are training our mind, because we understand on the road of life, we are going to confront and interact with people who don’t want us to be there who don’t think that we’re worthy of being there, who think that we should quit, our body is going to tell us halfway on that marathon, I can’t go any further. You know what’s important? What is your response to that? What is your response to feeling like the wall, the doors, life is just close this curtain idea, the attitude of a marathon runner who was determined to finish the race will push through, will push through that wall will break through that wall that’s that break out performance, a performance that nobody thought was possible, they continue, they got out of their head, they found a rhythm, they found their zone are able to perform beyond their own expectation.
Because if it was an easy race, everybody would say they’re a marathon runner. So if your goal was an easy goal, if it’s the low hanging fruit goal, I challenge you to reach higher, to run farther, to do more than even you think it’s possible. Because if you put your goal out there and begin to show signs that you can actually attain it. It opens up your mind. So the week that you run 13, you tell yourself it wasn’t that bad. I can run further. The week that you run further, you tell yourself wow, I did this with a little more training, I can do that. So a marathons mentality is fundamental in how we approach our goals. Are you going to be the person who feels the pressure?
Who feels the discomfort whose body is yelling at itself to stop? whose mind is like I can’t go any further and stops? Or are you going to break do? Are you going to be part of that rare fraternity of individuals who starts something and sees it through who feels the adversity who feels the contrast and bears down and pushes their body by the will of their mind to achieve more. I’m not saying live has to be hard or is in itself naturally hard. But what I’m saying is, life will show you what you’re prepared for. And if you don’t prepare for life, be prepared to fail. It’s that simple. So the marathons mentality, we can begin to list skills that we need to acquire a psychology that we need to adopt and begin to practice these in your daily behaviors.
When adversity comes how do you respond? When somebody closes a door? Do you look for the next open one? This is a psychology that you need to begin to instill in your day to day lives. This isn’t something for the big race because you’re on a big race and As you continue to train as you continue to refine, not only your body but your mind, you will be that perfectly tuned instrument. Right? That perfectly tuned instrument that hits that right? Nope. That slice is Studio versity and stands there, looking at what you’ve done standing in your glory in humility, understanding that the reason that you’re there is because of what you did yesterday, what you did the day before yesterday. The marathons mentality is a race.
It’s a long endurance, race and life isn’t that long endurance life. Most lives lasts 60 plus years. Most times you don’t see that success until your mid to late 30s. The fruits of your labor will yield you the bounty that you’ve prepared for. Have you prepare? Are you ready? Are you prepared to be ready? Marathons mentality?
